Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. Love your videos!! where can I buy doors for the coops like yours? We put it of bark mulch (made on out property) in the chicken run, they eventually turn this to soil, no smell or slush in the run when rain or dust in summer, they keep turning the bark over, looking for insects, etc & it breaks down nicely

  2. But what if I can’t keep chickens due to city regulation? (Located in the area of Los Angeles County) Will commercial or organic process chicken poop be ok to use in that case?

  3. I feel your pain on the rain interrupting your working momentum… but… hailing from California with our MISERABLE drought, what we wouldn’t give for a blessed downpour like that… my chickens would be dancing around in it like yours were! Love your info, thank u!

  4. I'm a bit late to the party but am just watching in 2021! We have 3 chickens & 2 more coming soon. I had no idea you can use thie manure straight on the garden. My chicken waste includes a lot of wood shavings. Can I still use that fresh on the garden? I was told not to – as too much nitrogen!
