Description:
We are keeping a video record of what we plant in our garden, where we plant it, and how much we harvest each year. We also raise chickens, quail, and fish. We are trying to become as self-sufficient as possible in our limited space. We live in a neighborhood. Our garden, fish, quail, and chicken space is about 3,000 square feet total. We wanted to lower our monthly grocery bill and to know where our food is coming from. We want to be able to rely on our own healthy, fresh, homegrown produce and less on processed and packaged food from stores.
Just a description of what we picked in our garden the other day!
One of the first harvests of our squash! We planted groups of squash in several different areas of the garden.
It’s time to harvest garlic! I think this is the best garlic harvest we have ever had. Most of the heads were big and pretty. Last year we waited a little too long and a lot of the cloves had sprouted. I think we caught it at about the right time this year.
In this video we show several strawberry harvests. Sorry about my voice in one of the clips. The kids have been wild at school and I have been having to talk over them, lol!
In this video we harvest carrots, harvest our spring onions, and replant them into the bed where the carrots were. We also transplant our peppers we started from seed into larger containers. Our strawberries are making like crazy!!
This is an update about what we have growing in our garden in mid-April. We are working to transition our garden from spring veggies to summer crops. We have limited space so it is a juggling act when shifting from one season’s crops to another. I said “Hitton Chinese Cabbage” several times. I should have…
This is our first real strawberry harvest of the year (other than just occasional grazing while out in the yard, lol). They are big and pretty and so sweet!!
We set poles and build a fence for our thornless blackberries to climb on.
We harvested some of our catfish and used the remains as fertilizer in our garden.
We are transplanting our tomato seedlings from the flats we started them in into our Solo cups. We are planting Roma, Better Boy, Black Vernissage, and Brandywine tomatoes this year.
We have a tiny 8′ by 8′ pond in our backyard that we have stocked with Channel Catfish. We recently cleaned the pond for spring and harvested some of the fish. We were curious about how many fish were left in the pond, so we decided to take the underwater GoPro down to investigate!
We don’t thin or separate our strawberry plants.Every other year we deep mulch our strawberry plants. We cover the entire bed with a very thick layer of leaves. We cover them so completely the plants aren’t even visible. The strong hardy plants push through the mulch layer in the spring for our new crop. We…
Our asparagus bed has finally decided to kick in and make asparagus for us!
Garden update from back in mid-March. We are fertilizing our greens with Black Kow and Blood Meal and then mulching with hay.
We are planting some White Kennebec Potatoes. We have one area in our garden that is dry enough to plant. We will plant more as the garden dries out.
Just a quick update about what we have growing in our garden in late February!
This is a very quick update on what is going on here. It has rained every day for about the last two weeks and is supposed to rain every day for the next two weeks too. We are doing as much in the garden as we can, but it is just a wet boggy mess!
We are prepping a bed and planting Candy onions. The soil amendments we used are Blood Meal, Bone Meal, and Black Kow composted cow manure.
We are still trying to find ways to expand the available growing space in our backyard.
We are starting our seedlings for the early spring garden!
We’ve had a couple of question from people about the size of our coop, how it was built, and other chicken questions. We are addressing some of these questions in this video.
We had a little snow storm and a long period of freezing weather. Our garden is pretty much gone. We cleaned up all the dead vegetation and started prepping the garden for spring!
We produced 1,300 lbs. of edible produce from our 3,000 feet of usable backyard space.
Our aquaponics system in our filters for our catfish pond has frozen over completely! We have had an extremely long cold snap for our area. Yesterday was the first day in about 7 days that the temperature got above freezing!
This is an update for the month of December and end of the year!
i was sent to a workshop in Biloxi, MS. I thought someone might enjoy seeing the Christmas decorations. I’m a sucker for some flashy Christmas decor, lol!! Thanks!!
We set out a lot of the plants we have started from seed. This video shows the new plantings and updates the existing plantings in the garden.
It has grown too cold for the impatiens in our pond filters. We are replacing the impatiens with some fall garden plants. We’ll see how they do!
The last few nights of below freezing temperatures have taken their toll on the Jalapeno’s. We are harvesting them and doing a final weigh in.
