VIDEO: Winterizing Your Raspberries – The Definitive Guide

Raspberries Are A Hardy Bunch! In fact, for most of us, we don’t need to do anything with our raspberry plants at all to get them prepared for winter. Little extra compost and some mulch around the base and they are good to go for the next few months!

However, in really cold climates, raspberries do need some extra protection. For most varieties, they have biennial shoots that live 2 seasons, meaning they need to go dormant and survive your winter. If you get a harsh cold season, then don’t worry, we got you covered. Everything you ever wanted to know about winterizing your raspberries, we’ll go over today! Enjoy.

  2. I wish I had seen your video 40+ years ago. My raspberries are the once-bearing on one-year-old canes. I completely cut out the canes that produced berries as soon as the harvest is done in August to give the new canes more sunlight, air circulation and to keep them healthy. In August, I trim the new canes to about 3 feet. I have been putting compost on them in the Fall all these year. But two years ago, I stopped composting due to growing population of rats in our area. Last year, I lined the compost bin with hardware cloth and resumed composting, only to find out that my lovely fluffy compost was full of huge white grubs that were about ready to turn into some nasty bugs. I got rid of that compost batch. I feed my raspberries in the Spring. I don't mulch them. Straw is extremely expensive where I live. Our stores sell it as 1 cubic foot packs @ $18CAD each. I live in Southern Ontario. Our winters can get very nasty. In the Spring, I cut out any canes that didn't survive the winter. I used to feed them with the fertilizer sticks that are meant for fruit trees. The kind that you hammer into the soil. But I don't see them in the store anymore. So I started to feed them with all-purpose Miracle Grow.

CAD What are your tips on winterizing/feeding my kind of raspberries? Do you have any videos on them?
